Article details the involvement of James Montgomery in the turbulent times of territorial Kansas. Montgomery came to Kansas in 1854, settling in Linn County. He eventually became very involved in anti-slavery activities including border raiding in Missouri. Includes discussion involving John Gould Shaw and a comparison of Montgomery and John Brown. He lead an African American regiment in 1863 in South Carolina.
