Four decades ago Wangari Maathai, a young Kenyan girl, was a student at Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas. In 2004 the enviornmentalist activist was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for aiding the Afrian continent's poor. The prize is to be presented December 10 in Oslo, Norway. After graduating in 1960 from Mount St. Scholastica, now Benedectine College, she earned a master's degree at the University of Pittsburg in 1966 and followed that with a doctorate from the University of Nairobi in 1971. Maathai is responsible for forming the Green Belt Movement that advocates planting of trees as a way to help rural women cope with the scarcity of firewood.
