Page 11: "Slaves were unevenly distributed in Missouri. Most of them were concentrated in the counties bordering the rivers, especially the Mississippi and the Missouri. Slavery in Missouri differed from the institution in the deep South. In the latter section dependence upon the great staples--cotton, sugar, tobacco, and rice--encouraged the employment of gangs of black slaves. In Missouri, on the contrary, neither soil nor climate favored the use of slaves in large numbers. Slaves were utilized principly [sic] in mixed farming, domestic service, industrial, and commercial pursuits. This was particularly true of Cole County in which was located the State Capitol."
