Article about the founding of Kansas City's first street railway system by Nehemiah Holmes (1826-1873), a native of New York City coming to Kansas City in 1856 as an engineer and realtor. He established the Mechanics Bank here in 1859 and then built the Kansas City and Westport Horse Railway Company, a horse car system connecting downtown Kansas City with Westport just before his death. Includes portrait, map of the streetcar routes, and illustrations.
