Description
Short description of the building and maintenance of Fort Carondelet by the Chouteaus for their fur trade. [Auguste] Chouteau obtained a monopoly of the Osage trade in 1794, and kept it until 1802. With his brother, Pierre, [Auguste] established Fort Carondelet on the Osage River, probably in what is now Bates or Vernon County. This was the second fort in western Missouri, preceded only by Fort Orleans.
