Profile of commercial real estate developer Fred Merrill and the Prairiefire retail center in Overland Park, KS. Merrill set out to build Prairiefire in 2006--a time when building construction was slumping--identifying a potential market for a mixed-use retail, living, and office space development in Johnson County. A major focus of the project was bringing in "first-to-market" retail operations such as REI, Cinetopia, and The Fresh Market, as well as establishing the Prairiefire Museum, a collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History.
