Description
Book excerpt about Felix Payne, founder and publisher of the Kansas City American newspaper during its run from 1928 to 1941. Payne was a native of Marshall, Missouri coming to Kansas City around 1900 and becoming a leader in the African American community and co-owner of the Kansas City Giants black baseball team by 1909, a charter member of the Paseo YMCA by 1913, and co-founder of the American newspaper in 1928 with his associate, Dr. William Thompkins. The paper was supposedly started as a rival to the Call with help or funding from Tom Pendergast's Democratic machine, and it did not survive long after Pendergast's death.
