Photo and chapter of the book about Judge John Finis Philips, or John Philips (1834-1919), judge of the Western District of Missouri in Kansas City from 1888 to 1910. Native of Boone County, Missouri, engaged in the Battle of Westport and serving as a national representative in Sedalia, Missouri, before coming to Kansas City as a lawyer. In 1888 appointed federal judge of the Western District of Missouri involved in many important legal decisions affecting railroads and other large businesses in the area as well as serving as lead defense attorney for the 1883 trial of Frank James in Gallatin, Missouri.
