Description of his life and career, born in Platte City, Missouri, in 1845 and serving the Confederacy during the Civil War before moving to Independence and becoming mayor, county and state treasurer, and "one of the proprietors of the wholesale grocery house of Beckham, Mercer & Co., in Kansas City" from 1881 to 1890.
