Biographical article about Emily Fisher, the "first Independence black business woman," born a slave in Kentucky about 1808 and arriving in Jackson County in 1836 and managing a hotel in Independence owned by her master, Adam Fisher, and earning her freedom in the 1850s. Description of her other activities, including the invention of an effective healing salve and helping in the establishment and construction of the Second Baptist Church of Independence in 1886.
