At the standing-room-only trial, the largest ever assembled in Kansas City's criminal court, Ramsden's difficult personality was brought out, and Martling swore that Ramsden had charged him with a ferrule. Afraid for his own safety, Martling had thrown the brick at him and then fled in panic. The jury was receptive to the quiet, dignified young man and found him guilty only of manslaughter.
