Early Kansas City Architects: Van Brunt and Howe

Photo and biographical article about Henry Van Brunt (1836-1903) and Frank Howe (1849-1909), partners in the Kansas City architectural firm of Van Brunt & Howe, established here in 1885. Van Brunt a native of Boston and "prolific writer and architectural critic" coming to Kansas City in 1887. Designers of the Emery, Bird, Thayer building (demolished), the Coates House hotel at 1005 Broadway, the August Meyer residence (later Vanderslice Hall of the Kansas City Art Institute), the George Blossom residence at 1032 Pennsylvania Street, the Frank Howe residence at 1707 Jefferson Street, the J. P. Flourney residence at 2404 Brooklyn Avenue, the Syndicate Building at 606-618 Wyandotte Street, the old Kansas City Star building at 11th and Grand Avenues (demolished), the Kansas City Club building at 12th and Wyandotte Streets (demolished), the Gibraltar Building at 818 Wyandotte Street (demolished), the Bayard Building at 1212-1214 Main Street (demolished), and the Gillis Orphan Home at 2119 Tracy Avenue.
