According to the Department of Defense, Defense Contract Management Agency, there are at least 130 civilian suppliers to the Department of Defense that are in business in a 65-county bistate region. This article contains a partial list of these companies and also gives a history of defense contracts in this area. Companies featured in the article include: Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Midwest Research Institute, Systems Material Handling Co. in Olathe, Cerner Corporation in North Kansas City, May Tool & Mold Co., Inc., Burns & McDonnell, HNTB, and Black & Veatch.
