Page 327: "President Grover Cleveland's 1887 visit held the same symbolism for Kansas City that [Marquis de] Lafayette's appearance meant for Saint Louis [in 1825]. Cleveland's stopover in Kansas City marked the first time any President had been there. Since it occurred at the zenith of a local real estate boom, the visit tended to substantiate the claims of the land merchants."
