Portrait and biographical sketch of Charles Valentine Riley, or Charles Riley (1843-1895), the "father of economic entomology" and "State Entomologist of Missouri" starting in 1868. Native of England emigrating to Saint Louis, Missouri in 1868 and founding the "American Entomologist" magazine there that year (with Benjamin Walsh, a classmate of Charles Darwin) before accurately predicting the reach of the 1875 grasshopper plague into Missouri from the West and performing other important research on impacts of insects around the world.
