Born in Austria in 1839 and starting out as "Secretary of the United States Legation at Constantinople" before emigrating to Kansas City in 1868 as a Union Civil War veteran, "editor of the Kansas City Medical Journal," and "Professor of Physiology in the Kansas City College of Physicians and Surgeons."
