Description
Biographical sketch of Lawrence Jones, president of the Jones Dry Goods Company of Kansas City. He was born in Illinois in 1856 and started out as a teacher. Includes description of his later career, starting his department store chain with his brother in Illinois and Kansas and moving it to the Kansas City area in the 1890s. It was located first on the Missouri side at 6th and Main Streets, destroyed by fire, and the second being located at 12th and Main Streets, "the largest department store in the United States west of Chicago."
