He was born in Callaway County, Missouri, in 1837 and became mayor of Jefferson City, Missouri and Missouri state treasurer before coming to Kansas City in 1885 as president "of the Citizens' National Bank," becoming "a member of the first board of public works of Kansas City, Mo."
