Description
Article describes historical and contemporary travel along the road from Walla Walla, Washington, to Fort Benton, Missouri. Fort Benton, constructed in 1849, was once an important fur trading post, and the uppermost point on the Missouri River accessible to steamboat traffic. The author also describes a May 17, 1859 engagement between a U.S. military party led by Col. E. J. Steptoe and a group of Spokane, Palouse, and Nez Perce Indians near today's Rosalia, Washington.
