Alvin Coffey left one of the only African American accounts of an overland journey and he was a slave at the time. Article includes a short biography of Coffey as found in "Pioneers of Negro Origin in California" by Sue Bailey, a piece called "Blacks and the Gold Rush" by Will Bagley, as well as Coffey's reminiscences. Includes picture of Coffey.
