He was a native of Arkansas but moved to Kansas City at an early age, graduating from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas and attending Kansas City, Kansas Junior College. He was "supervisor of the James Crews [postal] substation between 18th and 19th on Vine" from 1963 to 1966.
