Description
During the weekend of August 12/13, 2007, the Kansas City Firefighters Memorial Fountain in Penn Valley Park was vandalized. Scrap-metal thieves stole about a half-dozen spray nozzles off the fountain for the copper. Copper is worth $2.30 to $2.60 a pound, and this kind of theft has become common in the area. The fountain/memorial was "dedicated in 1991 in honor of the city's fallen firefighters. The 1988 death of six firefighters in a construction-site explosion spurred construction of the $1.2 million memorial." A security camera has been installed on the site.
