Excavation work began on July 17, 1933, for the Jackson County Courthouse at 13th and Locust Streets. The building was dedicated on December 27, 1934, with 14 floors. The site was acquired for $1,010,000 (the block bounded by 12th, Oak, 13th, and Locust Streets). The architects were Keene & Simpson, Wight & Wight, and Fred C. Gunn, (all of Kansas City, Missouri) and the consulting architect was Edward F. Neild. The construction contract was awarded to Swenson Construction Company for $2,145,288.
